How to Check Your Car’s Suspension?

The suspension — is the foundation of your safety and comfort. It takes the first hits from rough roads, so its condition needs regular checks. Even if you’re not a professional mechanic, you can do a basic diagnosis yourself by listening closely to your iron horse. After maintenance, many car owners also think about tuning, choosing practical or decorative accessories for their vehicle.

When should you sound the alarm?

Before putting the car on a lift, pay attention to these common symptoms while driving:

• Unusual noises: Knocking, clunking, or squeaking over bumps usually points to worn bushings, stabilizer links, or ball joints.
• Worse handling: If the car feels like it’s «floating» on the road or you notice play in the steering wheel, the issue may be in the tie-rod ends, steering rods, or other steering components.
• Vibrations: A shaking steering wheel at speed often indicates wheel imbalance or problems with the wheel bearings.
• Uneven tire wear: This is a clear sign of incorrect wheel alignment.

Self-check algorithm

For a more detailed inspection, take a few simple steps:

1. Visual inspection: Check the shock absorbers for oil leaks. No leaks are a good sign, but they don’t guarantee full serviceability.
2. Bounce test: Press down firmly on the body near each wheel. If the car bounces more than one to one and a half times, the struts need replacing.
3. Boot inspection: Inspect the rubber protective boots on the CV joints and ball joints. Even a small crack will let dirt in and lead to quick failure of the part.
4. Bearing check: Jack up the wheel and spin it. It should rotate quietly, without humming or binding.

Regular suspension checks (every 10–15 thousand kilometers) help you avoid expensive major repairs and ensure predictable vehicle behavior in emergency situations.
