H8 Headlight Bulbs
H8 is an automotive bulb type with a PGJ19-1 base: a standard halogen H8 is rated at 35 W at 12 V and is most commonly used in fog lights. In this section you’ll find two types of H8 bulbs: 35 W halogen Philips and GE (sold individually) and Niken Eco-series and Pro-series LED kits with 2 bulbs, designed for H8, H9 and H11 bases.
| Bulb | Type | Specs from the product card | In the box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philips H8 35W (p/n 12360) | halogen | 35 W, glass bulb | 1 pc |
| GE H8 35W (p/n 53090) | halogen | 35 W, glass bulb | 1 pc |
| Niken Eco-series H8/H9/H11 | LED | 40 W, 8000 lm, 6500 K, fan 7500 rpm | 2 pcs with built-in drivers |
| Niken Pro-series H8/H9/H11 | LED | 32 W, 8000 lm, 6500 K, fan 8500 rpm | 2 pcs with built-in drivers |
How to tell if your headlamp uses H8
You don’t choose a bulb by car make, but by the marking on the base of the old bulb or by the vehicle manual, where the bulb type is listed for each lamp. Model year or VIN is often not enough: the same model can have different bumpers and headlamps. On many cars the low beam uses H7 or H4, while H8 is used only for fog lights, so don’t order H8 for the main beam without checking. If the marking has worn off, send a photo of the old bulb and the lamp housing and we’ll tell you which base you need.
Can H9 or H11 be used instead of H8
Halogen H8 (PGJ19-1), H11 (PGJ19-2) and H9 (PGJ19-5) bulbs have a similar connector, but the tabs on the flange are positioned differently and the wattage is different, so they are not direct replacements without verification. Installing a higher-wattage bulb than the lamp is designed for is not recommended: overheating can damage the fog light’s plastic housing, reflector and wiring. Niken LED kits are different: they’re made to fit all three bases and are listed both in this section and in the H11 bulbs section.
Halogen or LED: what to choose for H8
- Halogen H8 is the OEM-style solution and installs as a direct replacement with no modifications. The light is warmer than LED; Philips bulbs are sold one by one, so for matching light in both lamps, buy two.
- Niken LED kit provides white light at 6500 K and 8000 lm according to the manufacturer. Eco-series is 40 W, Pro-series is 32 W and has a faster fan (8500 vs 7500 rpm). Both are a pair of bulbs with built-in drivers.
An LED bulb with a fan is longer than a halogen bulb, so before buying, check that there’s enough space behind the fog light or under the headlamp dust cap, and that the bulb locks securely in the socket. Other LED options are in the LED bulbs section.
Do you need a CANbus adapter for H8 LED bulbs
LEDs draw less current than halogen bulbs, so some vehicles may see them as a fault: you may get a dashboard warning or the bulb may flicker. Whether this happens depends on your car’s electronics. For these cases there is the LED Canbus adapter H8/9/11 (40W) — 2 pcs per set, one for each bulb. A CANbus adapter (load resistor) removes the error and is not a mounting adapter that only holds the bulb in place. All options are in the Canbus adapters section.
What to check before replacing an H8 bulb
- Marking and wattage of the old bulb: H8 is 35 W.
- For LED: space for the heatsink with fan and secure fitment in the socket.
- Whether you need a CANbus adapter: after installation, turn on the fog lights and check for any errors.
- Beam aim: fog lights are aimed low; after replacement, check the beam pattern on a wall so you don’t dazzle oncoming traffic.
Bulbs for other bases and light types are collected in the Car bulbs section, and the fog lights themselves are in the Fog lights section.
