Reviews 3M Double-Sided Tape For Universal Accessories
3M double-sided tape is a self-adhesive mounting tape based on ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) from manufacturer 3M (USA), sold in rolls of 1 m and 5 m with widths of 6, 9, 12, 15 or 20 mm, and a 10 m roll with a width of 10 mm. In auto tuning it is used to attach spoilers and lip spoilers, mirror and arch trims, moldings, window deflectors, badges and headlight eyelids. For the tape to hold, both surfaces must be clean and degreased, and you should stick it on in warm conditions, at above-zero temperature, pressing the part firmly along the entire length.
| Tape width | Roll length | For which parts |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 1 m or 5 m | window deflectors, lip spoilers, thin spoilers, mirror trims, headlight eyelids, narrow moldings, badges |
| 9 mm | 1 m or 5 m | spoilers, trims and decorative elements with a slightly wider edge |
| 10 mm | 10 m | universal запас for several jobs |
| 12 mm | 1 m or 5 m | spoilers for the sedan trunk lid |
| 15 mm | 1 m or 5 m | mirror trims with a wide fit, arch and sill trims, large spoilers |
| 20 mm | 1 m or 5 m | widest: wide contact areas; for a wider edge—two strips side by side |
The adhesive layer of the tape is dark gray, almost black, and covered with a red protective film with the 3M logo. Most often, the tape is bought together with a spoiler or mirror trims: many such parts do not include mounting hardware in the set, and it is purchased separately. Another common task is to re-tape a window deflector or a chrome trim piece whose factory tape has come off.
What the “Select size” parameter means
Each option is two numbers: tape width in millimeters and roll length in meters. The tape composition is the same in all options; only the size differs.
- 1-meter roll — widths 6, 9, 12, 15 or 20 mm. Enough for one small part: a lip spoiler, a pair of trims, a badge.
- 5-meter roll — the same widths 6, 9, 12, 15 and 20 mm. For several parts or long edges.
- 10-meter roll — only 10 mm width, запас for several jobs.
The tape is sold as full rolls; it is not cut to length: if you need, for example, 2 meters, take two 1 m rolls. The price, availability and dispatch time are different for each size—these are visible after selecting an option in the product card.
How to choose the width for your task
The main rule: the tape must lie on the contact area of the part and not protrude from under the edge. Therefore, the width is chosen not “with margin”, but according to the width of the mounting edge—equal to it or slightly narrower.
- 6 mm — the most popular size. Narrow edges: window deflectors, front bumper lip spoilers, thin trunk lid spoilers, mirror trims, headlight eyelids, narrow moldings and badges and lettering.
- 9 mm — the same tasks when the part’s edge is slightly wider: spoilers, trims, decorative elements.
- 12 mm — larger spoilers for the sedan trunk lid.
- 15 and 20 mm — wide contact areas: mirror trims with a wide fit, fender flares and arch trims, plastic sill trims, large spoilers. 20 mm is the widest tape in the range; for a wider area, stick two strips side by side, for example a molding about 2 cm wide—with two 9 mm strips.
- 10 mm × 10 m — a universal запас if there are several jobs or the exact edge width is not yet known.
How many meters you need
Measure the length of all edges that need to be glued and add a margin for trimming. A practical reference: for a spoiler on a sedan trunk lid, about a meter of tape is enough. For long parts such as arch trims, the amount depends on how many strips are used to glue them, so multiply the edge length by the number of strips.
How to stick it so it holds
- Wash the mounting area and the part, degrease both surfaces, for example with alcohol.
- Stick only at above-zero temperature, in a warm dry room: on cold metal or plastic the tape bonds worse, so in winter it is worth warming the part up a bit.
- First apply the tape to the part, then remove the red film, position the part in place and press firmly along the entire length.
For glass, painted and complex surfaces where maximum adhesion is needed, 3M Primer 94 is used. Heavy parts, depending on the product, are also attached with sealant or self-tapping screws—check the mounting method in the description of the specific part. Thus, arch trims can be set on tape—this is simpler and faster, but for parts that go under the arch and are subjected to load at speed, glass adhesive-sealant or a combination of tape with sealant or fastening from below is more reliable. Other tapes are in the double-sided tape section.
